Joseph Ray was born 25 November 1807 in Ohio County, West Virginia. He earned his medical degree from Ohio Medical College at the age of 22. He left the medical profession in 1831 to join the faculty of Woodward High School as an instructor of Mathematics. He published numerous mathematic textbooks. He died in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1855.
