Edward Olney was born in Moreau, Saratoga County, New York on 24 July 1827. He began teaching at the age of 19 at a district school in Ohio and at age 21 became Principal of the Union School at Perrysburg, Ohio. In 1853 he became Chair of Mathematics in Kalamazoo College and then was appointed Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan in 1863. He died in An Arbor, Michigan on 16 January 1887.
