Edward Brooks was born 16 January 1831 in Stony Point New York and graduated from Liberty Normal Institute, New York. He taught three years at the University of Northern Pennsylvania in Bethany, and two years at the Academy at Monticello, New York before becoming one of the original members of the faculty at Millersville State Normal School. He served as the third Principal of the Normal School from 1866 to 1883. He went on to become Superintendent of the Public School in Philadelphia. He died 29 June 1912 in Overbrook, Pennsylvania.
