Elias Loomis was born 7 August 1811 in Willington, Connecticut and was graduated from Yale College in 1830. From 1836 to 1844 he was Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at Western Reserve College in Hudson, Ohio. He then became Professor of Natural Philosophy and Mathematics at the University of the City of New York from 1844 to 1860. In 1860 he became Professor of Natural Philosophy at Yale. He died in New Haven Connecticut on 15 August 1889.
