James Thomson, 1808-1883

James Bates Thomson was born 21 May 1808 in Springfield, Vermont and was graduated from Yale College in 1834.  He took charge of the academy in Nantucket, Massachusetts in 1835, remaining until 1842 when he moved to Auburn, New York.  He then devoted himself to the organization and extension of Teachers’ Institutes.  In 1846 he moved to New York City where he concentrated on the complete of a series of mathematical works.  He died 22 June 1883 in Brooklyn, New York.
