“It’s not good to be complacent, but I was complacent.” Despite various offers, including offers to chair the Affirmative Action Program, to chair the Act 101 Program, and to chair the English Department, Jackson “didn’t seek to move up because the courses [she] taught were courses that [she] enjoyed teaching, and [she] wasn’t looking for some of the more popular courses or some of the more desirable courses such as the Shakespearean courses and the Miltonic courses and that kind of thing.” 

“My favorite writers were African American writers and I really made every effort I could to include them in my literature classes because at that time we didn’t have any courses in Black Studies and certainly not in African American literature. And to expose the students to a diversity of writers, I included African American writers, especially in my Introduction to Literature class.”
