Countee Cullen

Countee Cullen (1903-1946), American poet, author, scholar and leading figure in the Harlem Renaissance.  1941 photograph by Carl Van Vechten.

Countee Cullen's first book of poetry was entitled Color and was published in 1925.  In 1929 his book of poetry The Black Christ & Other Poems was published by Harper & Brothers.  His poem "The Black Christ" was an ode on the lynchings taking place in America.
